Sachin Tendulkar is just not a name. He’s the pride of India, the god of cricket. We know most things about the little master but there are few that we probably don’t know.

Here are some of his life’s big and small things that’s worth knowing,

  2. Ramesh Tendulkar – Sachin’s father – is a noted novelist in Marathi language.
  3. Rajni, Sachin’s mother, was an employee in the Insurance sector.
  4. Ramesh Tendulkar was a great fan of Sachin Dev Burman – the renowned music director Sachin Dev Burman. This reportedly is the reason why he chose the name Sachin for his son.
  5. Nitin and Ajit are the two step brothers of Sachin. Savita is his step sister.
  6. As a young child, Sachin lived in Bandra East – a prominent locality of Mumbai city.
  7. During his school days, Sachin was quarrelsome and frequently fought with his friends and fellow students.
  8. Sachin had a fascination for Tennis and was a great admirer of John McEnroe.
  9. Sachin was introduced to the game of Cricket by the famous trainer and coach, Ramakant Achrekar.

  10. Sachin obtained admission in Sharadashram Vidyamandir (English) High School located Dadar. This school had a talented cricket team.
  11. Ramakant Achrekar took special interest in Sachin and taught him cricket. There were daily training sessions at Shivaji Park and Sachin painstakingly practice d at the nets for long hours.
  12. Interestingly, Sachin was recognized as a child prodigy cricketer during his school days.
  13. Sachin initially represented Kanga League and subsequently played cricket for CCI – the Cricket Club of India.
  14. Sachin is ambidextrous. He uses right hand for bowling and fielding and left hand for writing.
  15. Sachin joined the MRF Pace Foundation in Chennai when 14 years of age, It was his wish to be trained as a pace bowler. But Dennis Lillee the Australian coach found Sachin unsuited for fast bowling and advised him to opt for batting instead.

  17. 1988 was for Sachin an extraordinarily fortunate year as he consistently hit a century in nearly all innings he played.
  18. Sachin had an unbroken whopping 664-run partnership with Vinod Kambli in an inter-school cricket match.
  19. Tihar Jail at New Delhi has two wards – bearing the names Sachin Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli to commemorate this feat.
  20. Towards the end of 1987, Sachin was picked to play for Bombay in the domestic Ranji Trophy tournament.
  21. Sachin’s Test debut was at Karachi against Pakistan during November 1989. He made a paltry 15 runs when Waqar Younis bowled him. Incidentally, Waqar Younis was also a debutant in that match.
  22. During mid-1990, Sachin became the second youngest player to hit a Test century. He had scored 119 not out against England at Old Trafford in Manchester.

  24. Sachin married Anjali, a qualified pediatrician when he was barely 22 years of age. Anjali is said to be six years his senior in age.

  26. Years from 1993-99 were the goldent years of Sachin’s cricketing life. He scored more than 10,000 in Test and ODI over that period with over 40 centuries.
  27. His father passed away when the 1999 Cricket World Cup was in progress. Sachin air-dashed to India and attended the funeral of his father and performed the last rites. He missed playing the match – India against Zimbabwe.
  28. Wisden Cricketers’ Almanac rated Sachin as the second greatest Test cricketer in 2002. He was ranked behind Sir Don Bradman, Again, Sachin was declared the second greatest ever ODI) batsman and placed behind the West Indies great Vivian Richards.

  34. Sachin was made an Honorary Member of the Order of Australia in the year 2012.

  40. The first car Sachin purchased was a modest Maruti-800 model. Now he has well over 200 cars to his collection that comprises cars like Nissan GTR and numerous BMWs.
  41. Sachin has steadfast religious beliefs and is an ardent devotee of Godman Sathya Sai Baba of Puttaparthi.
  42. Sachin was visibly disturbed and called off his birthday celebrations after hearing the death of Sai Baba.

  44. Sachin put in a guest appearance acting as Sachin Tendulkar in the Bollywood film “Stumped”. This was in the year 2003.
  45. Sachin is the sole Indian cricketer to have a statue at Madame Tussaud’s wax museum.

  50. Sachin annually sponsors 200 socially displaced children through, a Mumbai-based NGO called Apnalaya. The NGO is associated with his wife’s mother, Annabel Mehta.
  51. Among Indians, Sachin has the third largest followers on Twitter after Amitabh Bachchan and Priyanka Chopra. He is much ahead of Shahrukh Khan, Aamir Khan and Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
