In February 2011, Google brought the biggest change in its search algorithm by rolling out the Panda update. The update detects low quality content and link-rot in websites.
It focuses on bringing better quality websites at the top of Google search results and downing the low quality sites.
Panda update is named after Biswanath Panda who is the main person behind it. The update deletes low quality entries from Google’s search index and make search experience better.
Panda Update has affected more than 15% websites since its launch.
Panda Update also downgraded the value of PageRank which was earlier the prime factor in deciding Google SERP for a website.
Soon after the update was discussed at the Google office, fellow engineers started calling the change as ‘Panda’ update to show their appreciation towards Bishwanth Panda.
Subsequently, the update was named as ‘Panda Update’ when applied to Google algorithm.
Bishwanth is an Indian guy who works for Google. He holds a B.Tech degree from IIT Kharagpur, and MS and PhD in computers from Cornell University.
Currently, he directs a team of engineers on improving user search experience of Google ads.
