VLC Media player is one great software to play audio and video files of all formats. The same software can be used for taking snapshots of a running video.

Here are two ways of doing so using VLC Media Player,

Method 1

  1. Open a video file and goto Video > Snapshot.

    goto video-snapshot

  2. To take snapshot hit the ‘snapshot’ button and picture will be shot at that instant. It’ll automatically saved.

This method is good when we need to take one or two snapshots. For taking a series of images, we have to use our second method which is a bit simpler.

Method 2 (Using Shortcut keys)

There is a shortcut key for taking snaphots in VLC.

Press Shift+S to take a snapshot. Press the keys repeatedly to take a series of images.

All these captured images are high quality png files. You can take any number of images, and they’ll automatically be saved in the default Pictures folder in your window’s C drive.

You can then use these images for creating slideshows and for many other uses.
