Google launched its free SMS service in India. Its been working in the US, England, France, Austalia, Japan and other countries for the past several months.

In India its launched in March 2012. Presently it supports a few mobile operators which includes,

Aircel, Loop Mobile, MTS, Reliance, Tata DoCoMo, Tata indicom

Airtel, Idea, Vodafone and BSNL are scheduled to support the Gmail SMS service by April.

CyberPassion Team tried the messaging service and it worked great. Initially, every user is given 50 free credits. One credit is lost after sending one SMS.

To send SMS, user just need to provide the mobile number, write message and send it right from the Gmail chat box. Also, one can reply to a SMS sent through Gmail directly from the mobile phone. Rs 1 is charged by the mobile operator for this.
