We are living in a modern computer world where laptops get outdated in every 3-6 months as new and higher configuration systems are replacing old one rapidly.Same is applicable to gaming performance of systems.Higher capacity processors,RAM and GPUs are becoming more popular with time.
If you look into common configuration of systems year-wise;you will notice that its doubling each year.During 2009 512MB GPU with Core2Duo were popular and now its 2GB GPU with Core i3/i5/i7.Thus modern games demanding higher GPU and processor are becoming problem for old laptop users.Today I’ll mention some tricks to improve your gaming performance for current gaming scenario.
1.Install latest GPU(video card) drivers:
Updating GPU drivers give you the latest updates and patches from your GPU vendor. It not only improves system performance but also improves performance of latest games with exclusive patches for modern games.Installing the latest GPU driver may increase your performance by as much as 20%.
Laptops are highly restricted for overclocking but some modern laptops and PC allow overclocking.Overclocking is recommended only for advanced users as it may completely burn your GPU.
3.High performance power plan:
Always run your system in high performance power plan for best experience.High resource demanding programs like video editing and gaming would run more smoothly with high performance power plan.
4.Reduce texture and shader details:
Simple way to run a demanding game smoothly is to simply turn down the resolution. But I recommend checking the game’s texture and shader and/or shadow settings. High-resolution textures often eat up video RAM.
5.Increase virtual RAM:
Increasing virtual RAM(hard disk acting as RAM) will ensure that your game gets enough RAM for its performance. You can put it around 3GB. To change this, go to the Control Panel > System > Advanced > Performance Settings > Advanced > Virtual Memory Change. Then, change the amount and click Set.
6.Set visual effect of windows to ‘best performance’:
Windows Vista,7 and 8 come with lots of eye candy. You can turn them off for better performance. To make this change, right click on My Computer > Properties > Advanced Tab > Performance Settings > Visual Effects Tab > Click on Adjust for Best Performance. You’ll notice that this is the same area that you go to adjust the virtual memory.
This can make your gaming smoother as it switches off extra details of the game.
8.Avoid system drive for game installation:
Installing game on drive other than system drive(generally ‘C’ drive is system drive by default) will give you higher gaming performance.Always install games on other drives of your hard disk that are relatively empty and healthy.Doing this you would also get advantage of saving your time as there would be no need to reinstall the game again if you format your system drive.
9.Adjust each game settings:
Each game generally has it’s own configurations and settings. You should manage each game separately for better performance.
10.Stop background applications:
Background applications not needed for gaming should be stopped for higher performance.
11.Defrag game drive:
You must defrag and optimize drive in which game is installed for best gaming experience. It will make data transfer faster between your hard disk and processors.
12.Upgrade your graphics card:
If your laptop supports GPU upgrade then you must shift to high performance GPU for gaming.Generally 98% of laptops don’t support GPU upgrade but desktop PC does.
13.Shift to Windows 8:
It’s my own personal experience with Windows 8 and ‘NFS The Run’.Windows 8 gaming performance is much better than Windows 7 with same hardware configuration.Higher demanding games like ‘NFS The Run’ which requires 1GB GPU now runs smoothly on my 512MB ATI Mobility Radeon 4570 after I shifted from Windows 7 to Windows 8 CP.With windows 7 it was not possible for me to play such games in good resolution which demand for 1GB or more GPU.
14.Use Game Boosting softwares:
For performing some of the above mentioned tweaks in one click you can use following softwares. They are effective for low configuration systems.
a)IObit Game Booster:
Game Booster 3 is capable of delivering the best gaming experience to you even if you have an old PC. One-click to boost PC performance is not enough, Game Booster 3 also allows you to tweak your system for top PC performance.
